USE CAUTION if pulling for Rocky Mountain Rescue

Postby chantelle on Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:43 pm

Hello,

My name is Chantelle and I am the president of Without Borders Boxer Rescue in Vancouver, BC. We work with Boxer Rescue LA and have been taking dogs from BRLA to Vancouver and surrounding areas for 10 years. We have a wonderful relationship and 1 hope will last for years to come. I have also been here to help pick up the pieces after Beady fell of the face of the planet and have taken in LA dogs with Beady's microchips. I became aware of a rescue today who pulls from California shelters who concerns me. I do not know anything about them, have not used them or dealt with them but after speaking to a potential adopter today I quickly have jumped on trying to figure them out.

Rescue: Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue
Animals: Pull what appears to be for the most part small breed dogs from California and Mexico
Contact: Rory O'Neill (she is the founder and claims to be a dog behaviourist but can't find anything on line to back that up)
Website: www.rockymountainanimalrescue.com (this website has just expired)
Petfinder: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/AB79.html
Reason for concern: My vet called me today about a client who had come in with a rescue dog for a check up. He was concerned about what the possible adopter was telling him. He gave her my number and asked her to contact me. In point form here is what she told me.
-dog is 9 months old and came from Mexico or California (as that is where all dogs come from)
-dog has demodex mange (she has no clue what it is but that it's none contagious, was told dog was treated not made aware treatment would need to be on going as the dog is positive)
-dog has recently been spayed as she has metal stitches
-has been told dog is up to date on vaccines but has not been shown proof

There's the info on the dog now on to the info that really concerns me:
-she found the dog on petfinder and emailed saying she was interested.
-no application
-no home visit
-she picked up the dog today from the foster home for a "day trip"
-She was told to take the dog for the day and make sure she gets along with the resident animals and she could have her checked at her vet at her cost
-she was told at the end of the day she either returns the dog to the foster home or pays the $1000 adoption fee

-she was told the adoption fee is this high due to transport and rescue costs. I know personally that our dogs come from LA. Our fee is $475. We ship large dogs and our adoption fee includes a brand new large petmate crate that the adopters keep. Our fee covers the basics, flight and crate. $1000 for a small dog with no crate etc. She is asking at least $500+ more then her costs on this dog.

I have not dealt with this rescue or people personally. I can not say anything about them but what I have been told by this potential adopter. I am very concerned by what she has told me though and want to get it out there asap. I will continue to investigate.

Thank you,

Chantelle Yates, President

I received the below email from Rory today:

"looks like it would be better to discuss in person what you are writing and hearing. spreading malicious gossip is illegal on that site, and that is what you are going. what you are saying also is untrue , not sure where you got your info, unless you made it up. if that is the case, i think we should discuss that so i can decide how to proceed."

Due to this email I would like to direct Rory and anyone to the below comment which I made in my original post.

"I have not dealt with this rescue or people personally. I can not say anything about them but what I have been told by this potential adopter. I am very concerned by what she has told me though and want to get it out there asap. I will continue to investigate."

I never said not to use this rescue only to use caution as I had received information that was concerning. Rory if the information I have posted is untrue I have invited you to privately and on the BC Rescue Board to introduce yourself, your rescue and set the record straight for all of us.

Thank you!
