brother, can you spare $5? i read the whole OC "special needs" email from last nite and if ever there was a more hapless animal, BLUE is it. crossposting only. this poor gal is skinny and blind, was abandoned at 12 yrs. of age at a high-kill shelter. the shelter staff have named her BLUE. they are networking her but she has had NO INTEREST (that' s what APC means). she is going to be killed in 2 days. i am pledging $20 to save her life. contact info for donation is lindarella888@yahoo.com (at yahoo.com).

VERY HAPPY UPDATE!

barks of love is pulling her wed. if her owner doesn't show up to reclaim by tomorrow. tammy at OC shelter is aware of this. ALSO, there is already an adopter!

PLUS, there was a foster offer so i'm gonna see if she will foster someone else (don't know who tho...any ideas?).

AND, to the best i can figure, BLUE has about $910 in donations!

not being a rescuer myself, am not sure how this should work. should barks of love get all $910 in donations for pulling her, even tho they have an adopter lined up?

the reason i ask is that BoL will obviously not incur any boarding bills, tho i can't be sure about vet bills.

and since they may not incur any major expenses, should some donations be directed elsewhere? any input is appreciated.

i suppose it's really up to those people who've pledged?

Do you know who the adopter is thru? Is it through BoL? And is the adopter going to pay for all medical, etc.?

If so, then I'd contact BoL and explain that everyone could use the donation for another animal . . .?

this gal contacted me earlier today about wanting to adopt blue. i emailed back that i could likely put her in touch w/ a rescue group to see if they would help her arrange it.

a bit later she replied: ashley at barks of love is going to have the shelter give her to me. i'll be sure to let everyone know how she's doing.

*****linda again: so i really don't know where she came from, if she saw something on CL/a forwarded email, no clue. either way, it's my understanding that wed. she is to go to the adopter.

here's what i think: BoL should of course get reimbursed (via donations) for pull fee and any pre-adoption vet visit(s). and perhaps something extra for getting involved and taking the time.

again tho, i don't do rescue so i'm not sure how these things go.

am working on getting more info regarding BoL's responsibility for blue if she is adopted thru them tomorrow. BUT, that being said, i am not thinking clearly lately. i have a lot on my mind. i was initially wondering how much of the donations BoL should get, considering they'd never actually have the dog in their possession. HOWEVER, now i realize that doesn't matter. i'd thought that some of the donations should be redirected toward other dogs in need, but that's what BoL DOES! they rescue dogs in need. i sent ashley a big apology email for even wondering how to handle this.

i get confused sometimes as the middleman.

if this adoption happens tomorrow (the only reason it won't is if blue's owners show up by 1 pm tomorrow, which they won't), then BoL should indeed receive all the donations, esp. since the adopter says she doesn't want/need them.

i gotta say, despite networking blue twice, BoL was the only rescue to get on-board. and only cuz the potential adopter advertised her services on care2.com, and BoL replied to her.

for this alone, i gotta give BoL props. and even if this $ isn't needed for blue, i know that BoL will use it to rescue other animals in need. frankly, i feel dumb now for ever having questioned any of this.

It was a legitimate question Linda, don't worry about it.

Also the donors might have that same question. I mean technically if I was donating to a rescue that saved him and someone adopted him w/o the rescue having to put down any money, I'd be a bit perturbed that the money went to BoL. I might want to be using that money for another specific animal of my choice.

Actually - it could be like me responding to a plea to help bail a rescue only money and knowing that it came with a big donation attached. And just taking the money, using the 'rescue to get the dog and that's that.

My concern is that if the person decides a week from now that they don't want Blue, will BoL take on responsibility for him? Or if the people decide that they can't afford medical (let's say he needs rimadyl) will BoL take over costs? If this ends up being a horrible home for him (they leave him outside) is BoL responsible for that placement?

As good hearted rescuers, we all need to bear in mind that pulling an animal for people, isn't not without it's consequences.

Hey, Linda--I just rec'd an email stating Blue has been adopted and requesting donations to be sent to BOL. Can you let us know what involvement BOL has in this adoption, who paid pull fees, if BOL paid, did the adopter reinburse them? who pays for initial/ongoing vetting, will a blood panel be performed, was home check done (or not necessary due to Blue going straight into adoption.) Anna also brought out some very good questions: is there a contract whereby the dog can be returned to BOL for any reason, would BOL have any involvement in future medical bills related to Blue's pre-pull medical status?
Just asking, as it appears that there is over $1,ooo in donations available for Blue and this is not your typical rescue situation.
